I’ve been putting off writing this post because, well, as soon as I say it, I have to do it right? As soon as I commit, there’s no turning back. Either I’ll succeed or fail, and I can no longer sit in my comfortable little corner talking the talk but not walking the walk. As long as I don’t tell anyone, I can always change my mind, or give up if it’s too hard. But then I remembered, OH YEAH, THAT’S NOT HOW I OPERATE (caps for my own benefit, just to make sure I don’t miss the point). I’m a brave, determined, resourceful, hardworking, gal, right? Right. *shivers in boots*
That’s right people, I have decided to self publish my Lily Singer Adventure series!! And I am scared shiteless about it too (that’s how the British say shit…shite…you get it). I’ve set a tentative release date of sometime next April, and there is a mountain of things I have to do between now and then, most of it stuff I’ve never done before and haven’t the faintest clue how to do (create an ebook, organize a launch party, find people to interview me, decide on cover art, get an isbn number, etc.). But that’s what google is for! And my wonderful writer community. I’ll figure it out, with the Lord’s help, and I’m going big or I’m going home. Well I’ll be at home while going big, so I guess I’m just going big.
This is a huge step for me. Well, a leap in the dark more like. I’ve dreamed about this for years, and now it’s happening. I’m excited, but also scared shitele–oh yeah, I already said that. Well it bears repeating. And guess what, me deciding to self publish is all YOUR fault! Because of your all’s amazing support (my family, friends, fans, and writer community) you’ve shown me that it’s not only possible, but desirable for me to self publish. I’ve been tempted to wait until I’ve “got it all figured out.” Being a perfectionist, charging forward full speed is not my way. I want everything to be just right. But if I wait for perfection, I’ll be a pile of bones before I publish.
Therefore, I did NOT wait until I’d carved out time to create a pretty, professional-looking landing page and email sign up for special treats, early releases, and giveaways. For now, you guys will have to use my “subscribe” feature here on my blog until I have that ready. That’s right, if you like reading Lily Singer, or you want to read it, or you just want goodies, go click on the “subscribe” button to the upper right and sign up to get my newsletter/updates. I’ve already got my first giveaway planned (it involves YOU guys helping me decide on the color of one of Lily’s Magical Items, with a prize for the winner color), so hurry and sign up!
Thank you, thank you, THANK you guys for all of your amazing support, time, well-wishes, and eyesballs (yes, eyeballs, because you lend them to my cause whenever you are reading Lily Singer). You guys are amazing, and you are why I’m self publishing, because you said you want to hold Lily Singer’s adventures in your hands. Some of you even refuse to read it until it is in “proper” form (you know who you are). Thanks for pushing me, now here’s me finally jumping, and hoping I land on my feet at the bottom. Full steam ahead!
(P.S. I will still be posting the rest of Episode 3 on my Patreon.com/lydiasherrer site for free through the end of December. However, for Episodes 4 – 8 of Season 1 and beyond, you’ll have to buy the books! My Patreon supporters get free copies, because they’ve been contributing to the “pay for an editor” fund from the beginning. If you want to jump on that bandwagon, now’s the time to do it! After about Jan next year, Episodes 1-3 will be moved from public to Patron only view, so if you want to read Lily Singer free now is the time.)
No need to embark on a scary journey without a road map. Pick up a copy of Peggy DeKay’s Self-Publishing for Virgins. This book is a comprehensive guide to ISBN’s, UPC’s, LOC, WorldCat and all those scary numbers. It sounds like you’re going to pursue publishing an eBook, but this book will still reveal in detail, the world of print self-publishing which has many parallels with electronic self-publishing. A very affordable education for about $17.00 from Amazon.
Thank you Larry! I actually picked up a copy of Peggy’s book almost a year ago, knowing I would one day read it :). It is on my to do list, and as Marian said, I have to tackle this one step at a time.
Congratulations on taking the plunge! It’s a big step, but it’s doable. It’s like eating an elephant, right? You do know how to eat an elephant, don’t you? š
Peggy DeKay does a good run-through, no doubt about it, but check out Amazon KDP’s free guide, Smashword’s free guide, CreateSpace’s free guide (DO buy your own ISBN, rather than using the publishing platform’s — it’s costy, but worth it!) and my post on publishing Part 2 http://www.marianallen.com/2010/07/publishing-on-kindle-and-smashwords-part-2/ . A bit dated, but possibly still useful.
Thanks so much for the resources Marian! I will check all of them out and consume them “one bite at a time” ;). Thanks for caring, and feel free to pass on any other advice you think of.
WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I am so so excited for you I’m like bouncing! I think you have totally made the right decision and I cant wait! First thing I’ll tell you is: Launch Parties need to start being planned 3 months in advance- and they are a LOT of work!! The rest is easy peasy ^_^
Haha! Thanks JJ. I wouldn’t exactly say EVERYTHING else is easy peasy, but I will keep your launch party planning guidelines in mind. Feel free to pass on any other advice you think of! And thanks for supporting me on this journey š
