What age do you recommend for these books? Would these books be appropriate for a tween?
The Lily Singer Adventures is a clean adult series, meaning the books are not written specifically for young adults, but are still appropriate for that age group (no sex or gratuitous violence, and little to no language). The author’s recommendation is 13+, though she does have some younger tween readers. The younger readers are usually advanced readers who are mature for their age and have already read, say, the entire Harry Potter series and are looking for something more hearty to dig into than your generic children’s novel.
Why is Sir Edgar Allan Kipling called Sir Kipling instead of Sir Edgar?
Great question! The proper convention of the honorific title “Sir” is to use it with the bearer’s first name, not their surname. So, for instance, Terry Pratchet is properly addressed as Sir Terry, not Sir Pratchett. However, keep two things in mind: A) Lily Singer is American and so did not have British honorific conventions in mind when she named her newly adopted stray kitten and B) the “Sir” in “Sir Edgar Allan Kipling” is part of the cat’s name, NOT an honorary title bestowed by anyone, so it wouldn’t follow the conventions of British honorifics. You are right, if the Queen of England had knighted a cat named “Edgar Allan Kipling,” he would be properly addressed as Sir Edgar. But since this is a fantasy novel, you can call him whatever you like, from Sir Kipling, to Sir Kip, to Fluffbutt (Sebastian’s favorite moniker). Just be sure not to make the mistake of calling him “Mr. Kipling” or you might find a dead mouse magically appearing on your pillow one morning.
