4/15/19 Due to the number of questions I have received about this box set, I felt the need to add this update so that there is no confusion about what is or is not available:
Q: Why don’t any of the buy links work for Wrath and Ruin?
A: Wrath and Ruin was a limited edition collection of stories that was available for three months only from Jan 2018 to March 2018. Since then the box set was taken down, and the individual authors have taken back the stories. Some authors have republished the stories by themselves, some have not. If you are interested in reading any of them, I would look at the individual authors’ pages on Amazon, or else contact those specific authors directly to find out where their story is available.
Q: Where can I buy “When the Gods Laughed: Part 1”?
A: Thank you for wanting to read my epic fantasy story from the Wrath and Ruin box set! Unfortunately, I have not yet republished it and do not have a firm date set as to when it will be available in any format.
Q: Why haven’t you republished “When the Gods Laughed: Part 1”?
A: Several reasons. The most important is that the book ends on a massive cliffhanger, and since I don’t have Part II (or Part III, haha!) written or even know when I will have time to write it, I felt it would be disingenuous to readers to put Part 1 up until I can at least let them know when the rest of the story will be released. I am not, after all, George R. R. Martin. The second reason is that I have submitted it to several publishers to consider and have not heard back from them yet, so until I do or I have decided for sure I’d rather publish it under my own imprint, Chenoweth Press, as opposed to going through another publisher, I cannot put it back up on Amazon.
Q: Why haven’t you written the rest of the story yet?
A: The short answer is – 7 month old baby. The long answer is a bit more complicated.
When the Gods Laughed is actually an origin story in a roleplaying world my husband built. We are both storytellers, but so far my husband hasn’t had a chance to write down any of his stories. So when I had the chance to write an epic fantasy book for a limited edition box set, and since my stories are all urban fantasy, I asked my husband if he would like me to write the backstory for his roleplaying world called Ashlar. We worked together on the worldbuilding and loosely based the plot on a myth told in the current timeline of his roleplaying game. Thus “When the Gods Laughed” was born. However, I tend to be a rather loquacious person, and by the time I was 1/4 of the way through my outline, the story was already 100,000 words long. So I decided to cut the story in two, and the first half ended up being just shy of 200,000. I intended to write the second half sometime the following year.
Then I got pregnant.
14 months later I have an adorable, wonderful, precious little baby boy named Wesley. But no “When the Gods Laughed: Part II” I did, however, make a goal this year to thoroughly outline the rest of the story so it is ready to write, and in doing so realized that I can’t write the rest in just one book, and that it will have to be a trilogy.
So, I apologize profusely to anyone who has read Part 1 and is dying to know what happens. Right now my family depends on my book income, and my main series “Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus – The Lily Singer Adventures” is what puts food on the table, so I’ve been focusing on continuing that series. I’m down to writing a book a year with little Wesley to distract me, so it may be a while, but I absolutely know I will finish When the Gods Laughed at some point.
Thank you for your understanding and support!

Just finished your fantastic story in”Wrath and Ruin”
Please hurry and finish the next book in this series. 😀
Also that was the best ending I’ve read in a while to
leave you hanging and wanting more.
Thanks so much Rick for taking a moment to let me know!! I’m actually rather glad you don’t hate me for the cliffhanger, haha! 😀 I really wish I’d had enough time to write the whole thing all at once, but the story turned out longer than I anticipated. I have some other projects I have to finish first, but I absolutely can’t wait to wrap up everyone’s adventure in Ashlar. Be sure to hop over to the box set on Amazon let people know what you thought of the story in the reviews. Thanks!
I am also interested in the second half of this story!
Me too! Haha! I keep asking myself where it is, then remember I have to write it ;). Glad you enjoyed the first half, and I promise I’ll be working on it as soon as my current projects are tied up.
Great story! Can’t wait to read the rest of it. And it WAS a nasty cliff-hanger!!
Awww, sorry *hides under desk* it really wasn’t on purpose, but I half killed myself to get Part I done in time, I couldn’t really keep going at that point. Glad you enjoyed it! I promise I’ll get Part II done as soon as I can.
OK, I need more of Mathias, and his adventures, I can’t believe you left it right there….
Any Ideas on a release date?
Loved it, Frank
Ack! I know! I’m a horrible person Frank, I should probably go do penance…but really, I never meant to leave people hanging, the story just morphed into this huge epic that I had no way of finishing before my deadline, so I had to figure out a way to wrap it up. At the moment, I have some other project responsibilities, but I’ve already finished one of them and moving right along to the others, so I hope to return to Ashlar this year and start on Part II. Unfortunately I don’t have any kind of firm release date, but I promise I won’t make anyone wait longer than they absolutely have to! Thanks so much for reading, glad you enjoyed it and Part II is going to be even more epic!
How soon can we expect the sequel to The Gods Laughed? I’m not a fan off cliff hangers that last years. I read so many books I tend to forget what I’m waiting to read. I’m hoping it will be out on Barnes and Noble soon.
BrynnS
Hi Brynn! I’m so sorry to have to tell you this, but I don’t know! (I’m not a fan of cliff hangers either, I had to end this book in one because the publication date was unexpectedly moved forward and I realized I didn’t have time to write the entire story and still meet my deadlines). I adored writing this book and have Part 2 all in my head and ready to go, but my situation changed before I could get Part 2 written and right now I have to focus on finishing my urban fantasy series because that is what is paying my bills and allowing me to stay at home and take care of my infant son. However, this year my goal is to do a detailed outline on paper, so that next year I can start writing it inbetween my other book projects. I think about it on a weekly basis and can’t wait until I can get back to Ashlar! As long as you are signed up for my newsletter, you will hear about it when it releases. If you aren’t an email sort of person, you could follow me on Amazon (so they alert you when I have a new release) or follow me on Facebook. Thanks you SO much for reading!
